US Players & Coaches Bring Outreach Program and Educational Message
to 4,000 Children in Bahrain, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda
CHICAGO (September 13, 2006) — U.S. Soccer has joined forces with the U.S. State Department to take part in a Sports Envoy program that will see players and coaches from U.S. Soccer’s National Teams travel abroad to conduct clinics and bring a direct educational message to as many as 4,000 citizens of Bahrain, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda.
The Sports Envoy initiative will serve as the first program in U.S. Soccer’s own International Relations Program established earlier this summer to help strengthen the organization’s ties within the worldwide soccer community. The four-part program runs from Sept. 13 to Oct. 14.
Each Sports Envoy program includes one male and one female coach and/or player. U.S. Soccer will be represented in these upcoming trips by three members of the U.S. Men’s National Team’s World Cup Team coaching staff: Glenn Myernick, Curt Onalfo and Phil Wheddon. Additionally, 2005 National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee and three-time World Cup veteran Marcelo Balboa will take part in the envoy.
Recently retired U.S. Women’s National Team star Cindy Parlow will be joined by fellow 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup veterans Shannon MacMillan and Tiffany Roberts, as well as former U.S. assistant coach Lauren Gregg.
The players and coaches will conduct clinics that will go beyond simple soccer drills and will also showcase team-building activities that will give the youth participants an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the American players and coaches. One of the important platforms of the program will see the U.S. coaches and players emphasizing the values of teamwork, respect and leadership.
Each Sports Envoy will be on the ground for four days in their respective countries, performing three clinics per country that target approximately 450 boys and girls aged 7 to 17.
The schedule for U.S. Soccer’s representatives in the "Sports Envoy" program follows:

New Soccer Field Named in Honor of Gold Medalist
SAN RAMON- At the October 19, 2005 meeting of the San Ramon Parks & Community Services Commission, the commission approved the proposal to name the dedicated soccer field at the new San Ramon Sports Park, located in phase 4 of the Windemere development, in honor of Tiffany Roberts.
Tiffany Roberts’ name was submitted in April, 2004, for consideration in the park naming process. Since that time, the San Ramon Soccer League has requested that a park or field be named in her honor. Tiffany Roberts is the only San Ramon resident Olympian who has won an Olympic Gold Medal. She won this prestigious medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. Tiffany also won a FIFA World Cup Gold Medal in 1999. As captain of the Carolina Courage, the defunct professional women’s soccer team, she helped her team win the Founder’s Cup title in 2002.
The conceptual plan for the San Ramon Sports Park in Windemere Phase 4 was approved by the Parks and Community Services Commission on July 14, 2004. The site is adjacent to the future site of Live Oak Elementary School on the north side of the site. The park’s main feature is an all weather, regulation Under 19 age group (U-19) synthetic "sports turf" soccer field, (330’ x 210’) with bleacher seating for 200 and lighted for nighttime use. This field will be used year round by both youth and adult soccer programs. There are three additional soccer fields on the site, in natural turf; one U-19 that overlaps the 90’ baseball field, one U-14 field on the adjacent school site; and one U-8 for younger age groups or for use as a warm up field for the dedicated soccer field, as well as 90’ and 80’ baseball diamonds, basketball courts and picnic areas.
